Justification
Helichrysum albertense is a widespread, but rare and very poorly known species. It is suspected to be in danger of extinction, but based on currently available data, its risk of extinction cannot be assessed. It is listed as Data Deficient.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is widespread across the southern Great Karoo, from Laingsburg to Leeu Gamka, eastwards to Klipplaat and southwards to Prince Albert.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Western Upper Karoo, Gamka Karoo
Description
It is an annual species occurring on low ridges and flats in arid karroid shrubland.
Threats
There is ongoing degradation of this species' habitat as a result of livestock overgrazing and increasing frequency of drought events in the Karoo.
Population

Historical collections recorded this species as locally common, but it has been recorded only once since 1967. It is possibly overlooked, as its habitat is botanically poorly explored. As an annual, it possibly only emerges briefly following sufficient rainfall, but it may also be declining due to overgrazing and drought. The fact that there were no collections of this species during the Karoo BioGaps surveys that took place between 2015 and 2018 is a concern.
