Justification
Helichrysum elegantissimum is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4675 km². It is known from at least 11 locations, but probably occurs at many more as its habitat is poorly surveyed. It is not suspected to be in danger of extinction.

This species occurs in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, from Ongeluksnek to the Witteberg near Lady Grey. It also occurs in adjacent areas in Lesotho.

Description
It occurs on grassy mountain slopes and along river banks.
Threats
It is threatened by habitat degradation in places due to inappropriate fire management, overgrazing and spreading alien invasive plants.
Population

This is a poorly known species. Its habitat remains relatively poorly explored, and it may be more common than records suggest. Its resilience to disturbance is not known.
