Justification
A narrow endemic (EOO 8 km²) known from fewer than 250 mature individuals and restricted to two mountain peaks.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
Formosa Mountain and Mount Anderson in Lydenburg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland
Description
Rocks on east-facing cliffs, 2000-2450 m.
Threats
Due to the nature of the habitat of this species (cliff faces), there are no serious threats. The grasslands on top of the Long Tom Pass and below the escarpment have been mostly converted to pine plantations, but these plantations are some distance away from where this species grows on Mount Anderson and Formosa Mountain. Although pine trees are able to establish sporadically on cliffs, this is a very minor threat (J. Burrows, pers. comm.). There is some potential mining pressure on the mountains around Graskop, Lydenburg and Pilgrim's Rest, but according to John Burrows it is unlikely that the cliff faces will be mined.
Population

Two subpopulations are known, one consisting of about 200 plants and the other of only 50 plants, and is not suspected to be declining.

Population trend
Stable
Conservation
Not currently conserved in any formally protected area.
