Scientific Name | Helichrysum wilmsii Moeser |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2016/12/01 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A widespread species that is still common, in spite of extensive habitat loss across its range. It is not in danger of extinction. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | Limpopo and Mpumalanga Drakensberg escarpment, from Woodbush in the Wolkberg to Barberton. It also extends to the montane areas of north-western Swaziland. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Forest, Grassland |
Description | Rocky montane grassland and forest margins. |
Threats |
This species has lost a significant proportion of its montane grassland habitat to timber plantations. In many areas, only small fragments remain, but plantations are no longer expanding. Most of this species' remaining habitat in Mpumalanga is now protected. It is however still possibly threatened in places by competition from alien invasive plants such as escaped pine seedlings and other weedy species associated with disturbance in and around timber plantations, but Hilliard notes that this species itself can become weedy in disturbed areas around plantations. |
