Scientific Name | Helichrysum bachmannii Klatt |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii,iv,v)+2ab(iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2020/11/24 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme & D. Raimondo |
Justification | Helichrysum bachmannii is poorly collected, as it looks similar to the common H. revolutum. It is currently recorded from four locations and is likely to occur at a minimum of five more. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is small (716 km²), and there is ongoing habitat degradation due to overgrazing, and habitat loss due to coastal housing development. Over 50% of this species' habitat has been transformed for crop cultivation over the past 100 years. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, where it occurs in a small area between Langebaan, Velddrif and Vredenburg on the West Coast. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Saldanha Granite Strandveld, Saldanha Flats Strandveld, Langebaan Dune Strandveld |
Description | It occurs on granite outcrops and in sandy soils near the coast. |
Threats |
Between 30 and 50% of this species' range is already irreversibly modified for wheat cultivation. Plants remain on small fragments and continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss to overgrazing and coastal development. |
Population |
Helichrysum bachmannii occurs patchily on granite outcrops and on remnant areas of lowland sands that remain between ploughed agricultural fields. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.

Population trend | Decreasing |
