Family
ASTERACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Rare
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
This is one of the smallest Helichrysums and may be overlooked, however it is restricted to a very small area (EOO 225 km²) and is unlikely to occur in many more sites. There is no evidence of current declines. It is legally protected from establishment of more plantations within its range, and is thus unlikely to decline in the near future.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
Barberton Mountains.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Barberton Montane Grassland, KaNgwane Montane Grassland
Description
Rocky sourveld grassland, 1065-1465 m.
Threats
No serious threats at present (John Burrows, pers. comm.) The species may have declined in the past due to the transformation of the habitat to pine plantations (EOO 32% transformed, calculated using GIS). However, according to John Burrows this cannot be said for certain, as there are only plantations on the one side of the Barberton Mountains, but there were never collections of this species from that side of the mountain. There is no evidence of serious declines in this species as a result of habitat transformation. At present there are laws in place to prevent further establishment of plantations on the Saddleback Mountains and, therefore, the species is unlikely to decline in the near future (J. Burrows, pers. comm.).
