Justification
The large number of herbarium records collected before 1940 indicate that this species was once common in the Swartland. Most of its habitat has however been transformed for the cultivation of wheat, and only four known locations remain. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of less than 1000 km² and continues to decline due to ongoing agricultural expansion, urban expansion and habitat degradation due to a lack of fire on small habitat remnants. It therefore qualifies for listing as Endangered under criterion B.

Threats
This species was formerly threatened by agriculture (wheat and vineyards). This was a severe past threat throughout the Swartland and this species has lost more than 80% of its habitat in the past 70 years. Urbanisation is listed as a past, current and future threat around Swartland towns, the subpopulation from Malmesbury common was lost to development in 2005. Lack of fire due to fragmentation is also a threat to this species. Nick Helme (pers. obs.) notes that this species is uncommon in the veld for over 20 years.
