Scientific Name | Euchaetis albertiniana I.Williams |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | RUTACEAE |
Common Names | Albertinia Mothflower (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered A2c |
Assessment Date | 2008/02/12 |
Assessor(s) | J.H. Vlok & D. Raimondo |
Justification | A population reduction of at least 50% is estimated based on 55% habitat loss to urban expansion and crop and pasture cultivation in the past 40-60 years (generation length 15-20 years). Alien plant invasion and habitat degradation as a result of vegetation management for thatch harvesting is causing a continuing decline. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Western Cape province, where it occurs in Albertinia. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Canca Limestone Fynbos, Garden Route Granite Fynbos, Albertinia Sand Fynbos, Hartenbos Dune Thicket |
Description | It grows in coastal sands and limestones. |
Threats |
Invasive alien plant species: severe past, present and future threat to all locations. This species' habitat (deep sands) is particularly vulnerable to invasion by invasive woody species of acacia and pine. The habitat around Albertinia has been severely impacted by dense infestation of Acacia, Pines. Urbanisation is a severe ongoing threat around Albertinia, Stillbay and Mossel-Bay. Agriculture: There has been a moderate to severe past threat from ploughing for wheat, approximately 25% of habitat has been lost. Thatching reed is another threat, dragging veld to promote restio growth for thatching reed is a moderate to severe threat as this plant is a small reseeder likely to be pulled out during dragging. |
