Scientific Name | Euchaetis laevigata Turcz. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | RUTACEAE |
Synonyms | Acmadenia assimilis Sond., Acmadenia laevigata Sond. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2018/10/01 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo |
Justification | Euchaetis laevigata has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 436 km². There are less than 10 known locations and it continues to decline due to alien plant invasion. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Agulhas Plain in the Western Cape province of South Africa, where it occurs from Cape Agulhas to Potberg. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | De Hoop Limestone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in sandy pockets between limestone rocks in sparse fynbos dominated by restios and Leucadendron species. |
Threats |
The most severe threat to Euchaetis laevigata is competition from alien invasive plants. Large parts of its range are densely infested with invasive species that are outcompeting native species. There are ongoing efforts to clear alien invasive plants inside protected areas, but it requires long term management as alien invasive plants remain in seed banks and re-emerge following fires. One subpopulation is also potentially threatened by habitat loss to limestone quarrying. |
Population |
There is no information available on the population of this species.
