Scientific Name | Cliffortia dichotoma Fellingham |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ROSACEAE |
Common Names | Bokkeveld Tree Rice-bush (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2011/05/31 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme & D. Raimondo |
Justification | This species has an are of occupancy (AOO) of less than 20 km², this species has one subpopulation occurring along a narrow band on the edge of the Bokkeveld Escarpment and is potentially threatened by climate change. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species is found in the Bokkeveld Escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Plants grow in arid fynbos on sandstone soils, growing in a narrow band on the edge of steep cliffs. |
Threats |
It is potentially threatened by climate change as this species only occurs in a very restricted habitat and should climate conditions change it is unlikely to be able to disperse to similar habitat. The Bokkeveld Escarpment is predicted in many climate change models to have a significant shift in climate (G.F. Midgley pers. comm.). |
Population |
It is likely to occur as a continuous population along the escarpment between Bloemfontein and Papkuilsfontein.
