Scientific Name | Liparia splendens (Burm.f.) Bos & de Wit subsp. splendens |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Borbonia sphaerica (L.) Lam., Leucadendron splendens Burm.f., Liparia sphaerica L. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable A2bc |
Assessment Date | 2012/12/11 |
Assessor(s) | A.L. Schutte-Vlok & D. Raimondo |
Justification | A population reduction of at least 30% is estimated based on a loss of 40% of recorded subpopulations to urban expansion and crop cultivation in the past 130 years, within three generations of this long-lived resprouter. Remaining subpopulations are potentially threatened by alien plant invasion and too frequent fire. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Cape Peninsula and Cape Flats. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Swartland Granite Renosterveld, Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, Peninsula Granite Fynbos, Boland Granite Fynbos, Hangklip Sand Fynbos, Cape Flats Sand Fynbos |
Description | Fynbos, on rocky slopes. |
Threats |
Subpopulations on the Cape Flats and Cape Peninsula have been lost to urban development, while subpopulations near Stellenbosch have been lost to crop cultivation since 1880. Alien plants are a potential threat, especially around Red Hill. Too frequent and too hot fires also potentially threaten remaining subpopulations. This slow growing plant will not recruit if fires are too frequent and seed set is naturally low. |
