In South Africa this species has been rarely recorded, and is known from a few isolated forest patches in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It is widespread across central and east Africa, and also occurs in Madagascar.

Description
Plants may be lithophytic, epiphytic or terrestrial in deep shade of evergreen forests, usually along streams and in moist conditions.
Threats
There are no known significant past, ongoing or future threats that are likely to lead to this species' extinction.
Population

This species is rarely encountered across its range, and is known from very few, isolated subpopulations. Its widely creeping rhizome leads to the formation of locally extensive colonies (Crouch et al. 2011).
