Scientific Name | Cheilanthes deltoidea Kunze subsp. silicicola Klopper & A.E.van Wyk |
Higher Classification | Ferns |
Family | PTERIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(ii,iii,iv,v); C2a(i); D1+2 |
Assessment Date | 2006/12/14 |
Assessor(s) | J.E. Victor & M.F. Pfab |
Justification | Subpopulations were recently discovered between Centurion and Irene in Gauteng that differ markedly in morphology and habitat from other subpopulations. This new subspecies has an EOO 900 km², AOO 2-5 km², is known from nine locations and the total population is estimated to be between 600-800 mature individuals. This taxon is declining due to urban development, alien plant invasion, incorrect fire regime and trampling. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Gauteng, Limpopo |
Range | Waterberg, Centurion and Irene, Gauteng. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Waterberg Mountain Bushveld, Carletonville Dolomite Grassland |
Description | Southwest-facing soil pockets and rock crevices in chert rock. |
Threats |
Habitat loss from urbanization. Other less significant threats include alien vegetation, unnatural fire regimes and trampling. |
Population |
There are 2 subpopulations in Gauteng - at Erasmia estimated 100-150 mature individuals, and at Smuts Koppie in Irene there are estimated to be between 300 and 350 mature individuals. These two subpopulations are spread out across the boundaries of 8 different properties and as this species is threatened mainly by development, each property is taken as a different location. The Waterberg population size is unknown, but assumed to be no more than 300 mature individuals (i.e. population size similar to Gauteng subpopulations). Threats to this subpopulation are unknown and it is assumed to represent one location.
