Scientific Name | Indigofera tomentosa Eckl. & Zeyh. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Indigofera incana Thunb. var. angustistipulata Baker f. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2021/05/04 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & D. Raimondo |
Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 12 982 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 100 km². It is found at between 15 and 20 locations, which continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss to coastal development. It is therefore assessed as Near Threatened, approaching B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | It is endemic to the Eastern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. It is found from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Groot Brak Dune Strandveld, St Francis Dune Thicket, Hartenbos Dune Thicket, Grass Ridge Bontveld, Goukamma Dune Thicket |
Description | This species inhabits coastal fynbos. |
Threats |
Its distribution range falls within one of South Africa's most popular coastal holiday destinations, where it is threatened by ongoing, rapid habitat loss to development of coastal resorts and holiday houses. At least 50% of this species' lowland coastal habitat is already transformed. |
Population |
Surveys of suitable habitat within its range show that there are between 15 and 20 locations. Seven of the 15 subpopulations monitored over the past 15 years are small, occurring as clumps of between 10 and 50 individuals. However most of the records on iNaturalist do not include sizes of subpopulations and thus it is not possible to determine if subpopulations are always small. Many of the known existing locations are threatened by coastal development and this species is declining at an ongoing rate.
