The construction of the Brandvlei Dam and two successive enlargements of the dam in 1950 and 1972 has resulted in the majority of this species' habitat being destroyed. There are new proposals by the Department of Water Affairs to raise the water level of the Brandvlei Dam once again and if this takes place, this species may well go extinct.
