Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Sarcocornia tegetaria S.Steffen, Mucina & G.Kadereit
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
AMARANTHACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Least Concern
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)
S. Steffen, L. Mucina & D. Raimondo
Justification
A widespread species recorded in almost all major estuaries of southern Africa. Although some decline is taking place due to habitat degradation as a result of changes in water hydrology, this is not causing a large-scale decline in the species and it is still very common.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape
Range
Estuaries along the coast of Namibia, the entire South African coastline and extending to southern Mozambique.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Marine
Description
Sandy estuaries, in particular low intertidal zones subject to regular and long lasting flooding.
Threats
Some estuaries are threatened by being exposed to siltation or barring of sea water from entering the estuary, this dramatically changes the hydrology. However the majority of estuaries are still in good enough condition for this species to thrive.
Population

This species is found in all estuaries throughout its range. It is particularly common in Maputo Bay and on the neighbouring islands.

Population trend
Stable
