Scientific Name | Muraltia arachnoidea Chodat |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | POLYGALACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened A4c; B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2010/09/01 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme, D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | A range-restricted (EOO 245 km²) but locally common Piketberg endemic that is declining due to ongoing habitat loss to crop cultivation. A population reduction of 20% is estimated to have already occurred based on recent habitat loss (past 15 years) and ongoing habitat loss is likely to lead to a further 10% population reduction in the next 10 years (generation length 10-15 years). |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Piketberg. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Piketberg Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Piketberg Sandstone Fynbos, in sandy places on low sandstone slopes or plateaus. |
Threats |
Habitat on flats, plateaus and lower slopes continue to decline due to citrus, wheat and rooibos tea cultivation. |
Population |
A range-restricted, but locally relatively common species. A small proportion of the population has recently declined due to agricultural expansion, and is expected to continue to decline due to sporadic habitat loss to agriculture, however, only about 10% of the remaining habitat is estimated to be arable.
