Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Muraltia stokoei Levyns
Higher Classification

Family
POLYGALACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Insufficient Information
Assessment Date
2019/03/28
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
A rare and very poorly known species, last recorded in 1969. It is possibly threatened by habitat loss and degradation, particularly due to competition from alien invasive plants, but field surveys are needed to confirm this. Based on currently available data, its risk of extinction cannot be assessed. It is listed as Data Deficient.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is known to occur from Viljoen's Pass to Kleinmond.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
Plants grow on rocky slopes in fynbos.
Threats
This species has lost habitat to timber plantations in the vicinity of Viljoen's Pass, Nuweberg and Groenlandberg in the past. Timber plantations are no longer expanding, but surrounding areas of fynbos vegetation is degraded by spreading alien invasive plants, particularly escaped pine seedlings.
Population

A rare and very poorly known species, last recorded in 1969. The population trend and number of remaining subpopulations are not known, and field surveys are needed to relocate this species in the wild. It may be locally extinct around Viljoen's Pass, but is likely to still occur in the mountains above Kleinmond.
