Scientific Name | Zantedeschia pentlandii (R.Whyte ex W.Watson) Wittm. |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | ARACEAE |
Synonyms | Richardia pentlandii R.Whyte ex W.Watson, Richardia sprengeri Comes |
Common Names | Sekhukhune Golden Arum (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B2ab(v) |
Assessment Date | 2022/02/07 |
Assessor(s) | J.E. Victor, S.J. Siebert & N.N. Mhlongo |
Justification | This species has a limited distribution range and has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 5497 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 220 km². The subpopulations are small and severely fragmented, with a continuing decline due to mining and harvesting for horticultural purposes. It therefore qualifies as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | This species has a distribution ranging from Roossenekal to Dullstroom in Limpopo and Mpumalanga province, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |

Major habitats | Sekhukhune Mountain Bushveld, Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Sekhukhune Montane Grassland |
Description | It occurs among dolerite boulders in open woodland and in rocky grasslands. |
Threats |
This species is threatened by illegal collection to supply the horticultural markets. Habitat destruction as a result of norite mining also poses a threat to the persistence of this species in the wild. According to Craib (2003) this species is also threatened by predation by porcupines. |
Population |
No population data are available for this species, but it is suspected to be declining due to illegal collection for the horticultural trade. Subpopulations are always small—fewer than 50 mature individuals—and they are typically isolated from one another.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
It is potentially conserved in a biosphere reserve. |
