Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Aspalathus joubertiana Eckl. & Zeyh.
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
FABACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Endangered A2ac; B1ab(iii,v)
Assessment Date
2006/12/03
Assessor(s)
A.L. Schutte-Vlok & D. Raimondo
Justification
A population reduction of > 50 % is estimated based on habitat loss to agriculture in the past 60 years (a long-lived resprouter, generation length at least 30 years). EOO < 1900 km², six severely fragmented subpopulations remain, where the number of mature individuals are declining due to too infrequent fire.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Napier to Potberg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Potberg Ferricrete Fynbos, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos
Description
Mixed fynbos-renosterveld scrub, in clay soil at low altitude.
Threats
Agriculture was a severe past threat - over 50% of this species' habitat was transformed in the past 70 years (less than three generations of this resprouting species). Lack of fire due to fragmentation is a severe threat to all Aspalathus species, as they require fire to recruit. All remaining locations for this species are highly isolated small fragments that landowners do not burn (D. Raimondo pers. obs. 2006).
