Scientific Name | Aspalathus lanifera R.Dahlgren |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Borbonia villosa Harv. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2020/11/25 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme & D. van der Colff |
Justification | Aspalathus lanifera has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1427-2290 km². It has seven known locations which continue to decline due to habitat loss to agricultural expansion on flats, and competition from alien invasive plants and too frequent fire on montane shale bands. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found from Cederberg to Koue Bokkeveld. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Matjiesfontein Shale Renosterveld, Ceres Shale Renosterveld, Breede Shale Fynbos, Kouebokkeveld Shale Fynbos, Northern Inland Shale Band Vegetation |
Description | It occurs in shale, around renosterveld-fynbos transitions on lower slopes and flats, as well as montane shale bands. |
Threats |
Cultivation of nutrient-rich shale soils is causing ongoing habitat loss on lower slopes and flats in the Koue and Warm Bokkeveld. In the Cederberg and other montane areas, Aspalathus lanifera occurs on shale bands, however, here it is threatened in many areas by competition from spreading, unmanaged invasive alien plants (predominantly pines). This species is a reseeder and therefore vulnerable to too frequent fire, which is known to be affecting at least one location. |
