Justification
Aspalathus patens is a high altitude habitat specialist with a restricted range, and an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2016 km². It is not suspected to be in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed under the IUCN 3.1. criteria as Least Concern but is nationally recognised as Rare.

This species is endemic to the Little Karoo in South Africa, where it occurs from the Seweweeks Poort in the Swartberg to the Kammanassie Mountains near Uniondale.

Description
It is localized to mountain summits in sandstone fynbos.
Threats
Aspalathus patens occurs in a remote montane habitat that is not affected by human disturbance. Its habitat is well-protected, and therefore it has no severe threats.
Population

It is a rare and localized habitat specialist. Subpopulations tend to be small, but the population is not suspected to be declining.
