|
Scientific Name | Aspalathus pinguis Thunb. subsp. longissima R.Dahlgren |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Insufficient Information |
Assessment Date | 2009/07/17 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A poorly known subspecies with a disjunct distribution that is difficult to distinguish from subsp. occidentalis in the Piketberg region, where the ranges of these two subspecies overlap. It has lost habitat to agriculture and is likely to continue to lose habitat to expanding cultivation and alien plant invasion, but at present its range size, number of locations or population reduction cannot be accurately determined. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Piketberg and around Malmesbury. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | Clay flats, in renosterveld and renosterveld-fynbos transitions. |
Threats |
Agriculture threats have been severe in the past and are now moderate and ongoing. Threats from alien species are moderate and ongoing. Threats from quarrying and urbanisation are low and ongoing. |
Population |
Population trend | Unknown |
Notes |
This subspecies is not very distinct from ssp. occidentalis, which also occurs in the Piketberg area (Dahlgren 1966). It may be very difficult to clearly separate and identify collections from this area. |
