Critically Endangered B2ab(iii)
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)
D. Raimondo
Justification
Wheat cultivation has caused a >90% loss of habitat and a only few severely fragmented subpopulations are likely to remain on small fragments, with an estimated AOO <2 km². Declining due to livestock grazing and the negative effects of fragmentation, including pesticide drift, loss of pollinators and poor reproduction.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Piketberg to Porterville.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Shale Renosterveld
Description
Renosterveld, shale soils.
Threats
Agricultural transformation was a severe past threat - over 90% of habitat was transformed in the past 70 years. There is a deleterious impact of fragmentation, including pesticide drift, lack of pollination, and a lack of gene flow (current severe threat). Grazing by livestock on remnant patches of renosterveld - severe past, present and future threat.
