Assessor(s)
D. Raimondo & N.A. Helme
Justification
EOO<1350 km², nine locations remain. Available habitat has been extensively transformed to wheat cultivation and this species is still declining due to urban expansion, alien plant invasions and too infrequent fire in remaining renosterveld fragments.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Hopefield to Tygerberg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Peninsula Shale Renosterveld, Swartland Granite Renosterveld
Description
Renosterveld on red clay soils (does not occur on sandy marine soils), 200-300 m.
Threats
Urban development (severe, past, present and future threat), especially around Malmesbury and Durbanville. Agriculture was a severe past threat - over 70% of this species' habitat was lost in the past 70 years. Degradation of habitat associated with fragmentation is a threat, this includes invasion of alien grasses and irregular fire frequencies.
