Scientific Name | Nesaea alata Immelman |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | LYTHRACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Rare |
Assessment Date | 2008/04/05 |
Assessor(s) | D. Pillay & L. von Staden |

Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | Limpopo and south-eastern Mpumalanga Lowveld. Also north-eastern Swaziland and possibly Mozambique. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Lowveld Rugged Mopaneveld, Tsende Mopaneveld, Granite Lowveld |
Description | Edges of shallow pans in low-lying areas. |
Threats |
The distribution range and population size of this species is too poorly known to determine whether it is threatened by extinction. It is quite likely more common than the three known collections and probably overlooked as it is a seasonal annual. Wetland habitats are very sensitive to degradation and this species is possibly threatened by habitat disturbance and degradation, but on the other hand large sections of the Lowveld is well protected within the Kruger National Park, which makes it unlikely to be in immediate danger of extinction. |
