Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Rhynchosia genistoides Burtt Davy
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
FABACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2015/08/19
Assessor(s)
D. van der Colff & L. von Staden
Justification
A very poorly known species, last collected in South Africa in 1919. Rhynchosia is a taxonomically problematic genus, and until species can be better circumscribed, and their distribution ranges and habitat requirements clarified, the risk of extinction of most species in this genus cannot be assessed.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
Mpumalanga, between Pilgrim's Rest and Sabie. Possibly also occurs in Mozambique (Verdcourt 2001).
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland
Description
Bushveld, rocky outcrops on grassy slopes.
Population

This species is only known from the type, collected in Mpumalanga in 1919, and one other collection from Mozambique. It was described in 1932, but overlooked in subsequent treatments (Retief and Herman 1997) and checklists (Germishuizen et al. 2006). The genus Rhynchosia is in need of revision, and species are difficult to identify. This species may be overlooked, or insufficiently distinct from other taxa to warrant recognition as a separate species.
