National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D1 |
Assessment Date | 2006/11/15 |
Assessor(s) | J.E. Burrows, M. Lötter & L. von Staden |
Justification | This species is very rare in South Africa with a very small total population, but is not threatened. The total population is estimated between 250 and 1000 mature individuals, and it is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D. This national assessment is not downlisted because significant dispersal is unlikely, as the closest sites are in north-eastern Zambia and Madagascar, and the taxon is also very rare in these areas. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | This species is found in Wolkberg, and from Bourke's Luck Potholes to Sodwala in South Africa. It is widespread but very rare in Africa, Madagascar and Asia. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Wolkberg Dolomite Grassland, Northern Escarpment Dolomite Grassland |
Description | Plants grow in crevices on dolomite cliffs or in soil at the base of dolomite outcrops, from 1260-1600 m. |
Threats |
It has no threats in South Africa (J. Burrows pers. comm.), threats elsewhere are unknown. |
Population |
Estimates by John Burrows suggest 50 plants at Sodwala and 100 plants at Three Sisters. It is not listed as Endangered (maximum population size 250) as there may be a few unknown localities.
