Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Ornithogalum gifbergense D.Müll.-Doblies & U.Müll.-Doblies
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons
Family
HYACINTHACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2012/02/16
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
Known only from the type collection, and described in 1996, but duplicates were never distributed to South African herbaria. The species was segregated from Ornithogalum ciliiferum based on its specialized habitat and other minor morphological differences. In a Conspectus of the Cape Flora (Goldblatt and Manning 2000) O. gifbergense was treated as conspecific to O. ciliiferum but not formally synonymised, and the name is upheld in the most recent classification of the genus (Manning et al. 2009). If it is a distinct species, O. gifbergense is likely to be a range-restricted habitat specialist, but unlikely to be threatened.
