Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa where it is found in the Roggeveld Escarpment.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Roggeveld Karoo, Central Mountain Shale Renosterveld, Roggeveld Shale Renosterveld
Description
It grows in heavy clay soils derived from dolerite.
Threats
The Roggeveld is severely overgrazed, which has led to the near extinction of some endemics. Many Ornithogalum species of the subgenus Aspasia are however poisonous to stock, and thrive under mild disturbance (Manning et al. 2007), which means that grazing has probably favoured this species and may explain why it is so abundant.
Population

Ornithogalum corticatum is locally extremely common, with dense colonies of thousands of plants covering large areas of the Roggeveld Escarpment.
