Justification | This species is common and widespread across the northern Richtersveld and southern Namibia (Global EOO 2575 km²), and not in danger of extinction. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Richtersveld, Gariep Valley and south-western Namibia. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Succulent Karoo |
Description | Crevices in boulders or on lower south-facing rocky granite slopes, or on quartz gravel flats. |
Threats |
Most of this species' range in South Africa is severely degraded as a result of overgrazing, with a loss of shrub cover and plant species diversity evident in many areas. In spite of this, this species is still very common. It persists in heavily grazed areas and appears not to be impacted by grazing. In addition, more than 50% of the population occurs in Namibia where its habitat is well-protected and it is not threatened. |
Population |
This species occurs as small, scattered subpopulations (typically less than 10 plants), but is found all over the northern Richtersveld where it is known from many subpopulations.
