Scientific Name | Lachenalia valeriae G.D.Duncan |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2019/03/19 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Lachenalia valeriae has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4275 km². It is known from six to eight locations, and is declining due to mining and overgrazing. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to Namaqualand, where it occurs from the central Richtersveld to Hondeklipbaai. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Namaqualand Inland Duneveld, Namaqualand Strandveld, Oograbies Plains Sandy Grassland, Richtersveld Red Duneveld, Southern Richtersveld Yellow Duneveld, Namaqualand Arid Grassland, Namaqualand Sand Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in deep red sand on coastal plains, rarely in sandy pockets of granite outcrops or crevices in shale rock slabs. |
Threats |
Lachenalia valeriae is threatened by overgrazing of communal rangelands in the Richtersveld (P.C.V. van Wyk pers. comm., N. Jurgens s.n. specimen notes). The impact of grazing on subpopulations elsewhere in Namaqualand is not known. The subpopulation at Kleinsee is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to mining, as well as another one near the mouth of the Holgat River between Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay where the species was last recorded in the 1970s. |
Population |
This species is common in the Namaqua National Park, where large subpopulations of up to 500 plants have been recorded. Elsewhere in its range abundance is not known. It is currently known from six to eight locations, and is declining at four of these.
