Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |

Assessor(s) | G.D. Duncan & H. Mtshali |
Justification | Lachenalia lutea is a widespread species. In spite of extensive historical and ongoing habitat loss, it is still common, and not yet in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Western Cape, where it occurs from Citrusdal to Strand, and eastwards to the Bot River Valley. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in seasonally moist, stony clay, less frequently in sandy soils. It can be found on low-lying flats and hills in renosterveld, as well as on shale bands in mountains. |
Threats |
This species has lost habitat on the lowlands due to agriculture and urban expansion, and loss continues. Many remaining subpopulations occur on small remnants of natural vegetation, where they are threatened by competition from alien invasive plants and inappropriate fire management. Subpopulations in montane areas are generally not threatened, but in many places its habitat has been reduced by timber plantations and fruit orchards on lower slopes. |
Population |
Lachenalia lutea is a common species throughout its range. It grow as a scattered individuals or in small to large groups. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
