Justification
Lachenalia lutzeyeri is local endemic at south-western Cape, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of <10 km², known from two locations that are potentially threatened inappropriate fire management and alien invasive species.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Western Cape, where it is known from a small area around Gansbaai and Pearly Beach.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Agulhas Limestone Fynbos, Overberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It is found in full sun in open areas or between sandstone boulders on southwest-facing moderate slopes.
Threats
Invasive alien plants are an ongoing threat, and irregular fire regimes is a potential threat.
Population

It occurs in large numbers, and the population is presumed to be stable. This species was only discovered in 2004. One of the reasons that it remained previously undetected is that flowering is extremely erratic due to its dependence on the occurrence of summer or early autumn fires, coupled with its very late flowering period and the slim chance of it being recognised as a distinct taxon due to its superficial similarity to other members of the genus (Duncan 2007).
