Justification
Lachenalia dehoopensis is a rare and localized species, occurring at one to three locations and with an area of occupancy (AOO) of 4-12 km². It is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species occurs in a small area around De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Potberg Ferricrete Fynbos, De Hoop Limestone Fynbos
Description
It occurs on flats and slopes with gravelly loam soils in the ecotone between limestone and shale or ferricrete soils.
Threats
Outside De Hoop Nature Reserve, it may now be locally extinct due to historical habitat loss to agriculture. Inside the reserve, it is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants. There are ongoing efforts to clear invasive species, but the risk of invasive species re-emerging from soil-stored seedbanks following natural wild fires remains.
Population

Lachenalia dehoopensis is a very rare and localized species. There are a few sites within De Hoop Nature Reserve, where it is nowhere plentiful, occurring as scattered individuals or in small groups (Duncan 2012). It is known from two historical records outside De Hoop Nature Reserve, but it is not known whether these subpopulations still persist.
