Scientific Name | Lachenalia physocaulos W.F.Barker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2019/11/15 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & G.D. Duncan |
Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of less than 300 km² and is known from two locations. It is losing habitat as a result of vineyard expansion in the Robertson-McGregor area. It therefore qualifies for listing as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Western Cape province of South Africa, where it occurs from Robertson to Swellendam. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Robertson Karoo, Breede Alluvium Renosterveld, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos, Cape Lowland Alluvial Vegetation |
Description | It occurs in transition between succulent karoo and renosterveld on sandy flats and slopes. |
Threats |
It is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to agricultural expansion, particularly vineyards. |
Population |
Plants grow singly within larger colonies, or sometimes in transition of vegetation types. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss due to agriculture, but the rate of loss is unlikely to exceed 5% in three generations.
