Scientific Name | Lachenalia sargeantii W.F.Barker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2019/11/22 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & G.D. Duncan |
Justification | Lachenalia sargeantii has an extent of occurrence (AOO) of less than 4 km² and is known from one location. This post-fire flowering species occurs as scattered subpopulations all over Bredasdorp Mountain. It is potentially threatened by alien plant invasion and is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is found in the Bredasdorp Mountain. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Overberg Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on rocky summit ridges and north-facing slopes in sandstone fynbos. |
Threats |
Alien invasive species are present in low densities in this species' habitat. If they are not controlled, they are likely to increase to such densities where they will outcompete native species in future. This species is extremely localized, which means that competition from alien invasive plants could rapidly lead to it becoming Critically Endangered or even extinct. |
Population |
Plants occur as scattered individuals in larger colonies or in small groups.
