Scientific Name | Adromischus umbraticola C.A.Sm. subsp. umbraticola |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | CRASSULACEAE |
Synonyms | Adromischus saxicola C.A.Sm., Adromischus umbraticola C.A.Sm., Cotyledon trigyna in sense of Burtt Davy, not of Burch (misapplied name) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(ii,iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2006/08/03 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme & D. Raimondo |
Justification | This subspecies has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 14 600 km² and is known from 14 locations. The rocky ridges where it grows are increasingly under threat from urban expansion within Gauteng. It almost qualifies for listing as Vulnerable under criterion B and is therefore assessed as Near Threatened. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Gauteng, North West |
Range | It is found from Potchefstroom and Zeerust to Cullinan. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Gold Reef Mountain Bushveld, Andesite Mountain Bushveld, Rand Highveld Grassland |
Description | Plants grow on south-facing rock crevices on ridges, restricted to Gold Reef Mountain Bushveld in the northern parts of its range, and Andesite Mountain Bushveld in the south. |
Threats |
The rocky ridges where this species grows have been relatively safe from transformation, mostly by agriculture, in the past. However, the ridges within urban areas, especially around Pretoria and along the Magaliesberg, are increasingly under pressure from development. The range of this species however also extends into areas that are not currently under immediate threat of development, and it is therefore estimated that only about 20-30% of the habitat could be lost within 3 generations.
Quarries are also impacting on the habitat. This, however, is considered a minor threat. |
