Scientific Name | Crassula fusca Herre |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | CRASSULACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened* B1ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2015/05/15 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | This species has a limited distribution along the western foothills of the central Richtersveld mountain ranges (national EOO 2169 km²), where it is known from fewer than 10 locations and declining in places due to ongoing habitat degradation. The South African population is continuous with the stable Namibian population, and therefore the national status is downgraded by one category following IUCN regional assessment procedures. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Southern Namibia and the Richtersveld. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Lekkersing Succulent Shrubland, Central Richtersveld Mountain Shrubland, Western Gariep Hills Desert, Western Gariep Lowland Desert, Noms Mountain Desert |
Description | Rock outcrops, usually in sheltered ravines or south-facing slopes. |
Threats |
This species is not grazed, but is a nurse-plant preferring shade and shelter provided by larger shrubs. In parts of its range, severe overgrazing has significantly reduced shrub cover, and in these areas, plants are starting to die out (L. von Staden pers. obs. 2014). |
Population |
This species is still fairly common in the Richtersveld, but is declining in places. In Namibia it is not threatened, and the population is likely to be stable. The South African population is continuous with the Namibian population, but this species has a more restricted range in Namibia, where it is known from only a few records.
