Overstocking of livestock is causing severe degradation natural vegetation across of most of this subspecies' range, as a result of overgrazing and trampling. Its preference for rocky crevices however offers it protection against the effects of erosion and trampling. Unlike many other succulent species in the area, it survives in exposed places, and is not dependent on the shelter of shrub cover.
Population

This subspecies has a narrow range, and is known from only a few collections. It is a habitat specialist of rocky crevices on Namaqualand inselbergs, and subpopulations are localized.
