Range
This species is widespread across South Africa, from Clanwilliam in Western Cape to Belfast in Mpumalanga. It also occurs in Lesotho.

Description
It occurs in permanent water, along river banks and in slow flowing streams, 50-3000 m.
Threats
Some subpopulations are threatened by habitat loss and degradation, mainly due to agriculture, dam construction, fertilizer run-off from agricultural fields, as well as overgrazing.
Population

This species is widespread and common. There is ongoing, localized population decline, but this is not significant enough to put this species at risk of extinction.
