Threats
This species has no severe threats. It is very spiny, and unlikely to be browsed. It is however an extremely localized habitat specialist, occurring in small patches of suitable habitat extending for no more than 20-100 meters. A number of these patches are bisected by roads, and road upgrades or maintenance could have a severe impact on these subpopulations (W. McCleland pers. obs.).
Population

Blepharis laevifolia was previously only known from the type specimen, collected in 1954. It was relocated in 2015 in the same area. Plants occur in small, isolated patches of between 50 and 100 individuals. It is currently known from only a few roadside records within a very small area in southern Kruger National Park, but intervening areas have not yet been thoroughly surveyed.
