Scientific Name | Dicliptera quintasii Lindau |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ACANTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2016/11/21 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A range-restricted near endemic to South Africa (EOO 1157 km², AOO <242 km²) known from three locations in Critically Endangered Sand Forest. It continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. The South African population is continuous with the population in southern Mozambique, which is also declining due to severe, ongoing habitat loss and degradation, and therefore the national status is not adjusted (following IUCN regional assessment procedures). |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | KwaZulu-Natal |
Range | Maputaland coastal plain, from south of Maputo to Mkuze. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Sand Forest |
Description | Sand forest. |
Threats |
This species is endemic to Sand Forest, a critically endangered ecosystem restricted to the Maputaland coastal plain. Despite much of Sand Forest falling within protected areas in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the commercial value of these forests is high and unsustainable exploitation continues, particularly for wood. The largest areas of Sand Forest occurs in the Tembe Elephant Reserve, where a high density of elephants is causing ongoing destruction of Sand Forest (Mucina and Rutherford 2006). This reserve is also at risk of being deproclaimed due to land claims. An unknown area of Sand Forest was cleared for agriculture and grazing in the past. In Mozambique it is threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation due to clearing of Sand Forests for charcoal production. |
