Justification
A rare and poorly known species, last collected in 1815. It is likely to be threatened, or possibly even extinct, but based on current knowledge, its risk of extinction cannot be assessed.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Riviersonderend Mountains near Genadendal.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
Uncertain, possibly lower south-facing slopes.
Threats
The specific habitat of this species is not known, and therefore threats are difficult to infer. If it occurred on the lower slopes, it is now possibly extinct, as the area was converted to timber plantations. On the upper slopes it is likely to be threatened by competition from spreading invasive pines, originating from escaped seedlings from the plantations on the lower slopes. Pine invasion is rapidly spreading across the Riviersonderend Mountains, and endangering many local endemic species.
Population

This species is only known from the type specimen, collected in 1815 at an unspecified locality in the Riviersonderend Mountains west of Genadendal. The genus Phylica is taxonomically problematic and collections are difficult to identify. This species is possibly overlooked and misidentified as other species. The size, extent of the population, as well as population trend is not known, but it is likely to be declining.
