Justification
Phylica guthriei is only known from the type, collected in 1895. Not enough is known about the distribution, specific habitat or population status of this species to determine its status. It occurs in an area where there has been much afforestation and is likely to be threatened. It is listed as Data Deficient.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found in the Franschhoek Mountains.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs on lower sandstone slopes.
Threats
The lower slopes of the Franschhoek Pass have been planted up with timber plantations (pines and gums) and part of the population may have been lost to habitat destruction. Ongoing spreading of escaped pine seedlings to the upper slopes of the Franschhoek Pass is a concern.
Population

This species is only known from the type, collected in 1895. It was recorded in a botanically well-explored area, and the reasons for the lack of recent records are not certain. Phylica is in need of taxonomic revision and the species may be overlooked or confused with other similar taxa. Field surveys are needed to relocate it in the wild.
