Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Freshwater
Major habitats
Tanqua Escarpment Shrubland, Nieuwoudtville-Roggeveld Dolerite Renosterveld
Description
Wedged among dolerite rocks in seasonally waterlogged clay soils.
Threats
This species' habitat is utilized for livestock grazing, and disturbance as a result of overgrazing and trampling, especially of sensitive wetland areas, is causing ongoing habitat degradation. Field observations indicate that this species is absent on heavily grazed farms, in spite of suitable habitat present, and seed set has been reduced due to grazing in other areas (S. Todd pers. obs.). Some subpopulations are also threatened by competition from dense infestations of alien invasive grasses.
Population

This species occurs in small, localized stands of fewer than 100 mature individuals in seasonally damp patches. Most collections are from Dolerite Renosterveld to the east of Nieuwoudtville, where plants have been recorded across four adjacent farms, possibly representing a single subpopulation. There is also one collection from clay soils in succulent karoo south-west of Calvinia, about 40 km from the Nieuwoudtville subpopulation.
