Justification
Two subpopulations remain within a small area (EOO 18 km²), after an estimated 50-70% population reduction over the past three generations due to habitat loss to agricultural expansion. This species continues to decline outside protected areas due to ongoing habitat degradation.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Eastern Swartland between Saron and Wellington.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Swartland Alluvium Fynbos
Description
Fynbos-renosterveld ecotone in an alluvial fynbos lowland habitat, where soils are a mixture of shale and sandstone.
Threats
Less than 30% of this species' habitat remains after most has been converted to crop fields. Loss continues, and small remaining fragments continue to be degraded predominantly due to overgrazing, a lack of fire and spreading, unmanaged alien invasive plants (N.A. Helme pers. obs.).
Population

This species is known from two small remaining subpopulations. One subpopulation is protected in a private nature reserve, and appears to be stable. The second subpopulation is likely to continue to decline due to heavy overgrazing and spreading alien invasive plants. The species is a long-lived resprouter (generation length 30 years), and based on more than 70% habitat loss over the past three generations, it is estimated that the population has declined by at least 50%.
