Scientific Name | Eriosema naviculare C.H.Stirt. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2011/11/08 |
Assessor(s) | M. Lötter, J.E. Burrows & L. von Staden |
Justification | EOO 22 km², AOO <22 km², fewer than five locations are known. Habitat at locations outside Kruger National Park is declining due to urban and agricultural expansion. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Mpumalanga |
Range | Hazyview to Pretoriuskop, Kruger National Park. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Pretoriuskop Sour Bushveld |
Description | Flats at the base of granite outcrops in Pretoriuskop Sour Bushveld. |
Threats |
Threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation as a result of expansion of rural settlements and agriculture, overgrazing, too frequent fire and clearing of woody vegetation between Hazyview and Numbi Gate. |
Population |
Fifty percent of this species' very restricted habitat of about 1 000 km² falls outside the Kruger National Park and is nearly completely transformed and degraded. A recent (2011) survey of the habitat relocated plants at the type locality, where about 50 plants are threatened by expansion of rural settlements, agriculture, and industrial development. No further subpopulations could be located in the area between Hazyview and the Kruger National Park. Inside the park, plants are also extremely localized, and only two very small subpopulations could be located, although a few more are likely to exist.

Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
Kruger National Park. |
Notes |
Flowering in this species seems to be stimulated by fire - all collections to date were made in recently burnt areas (Stirton 1983), however, in a 2011 survey plants were also found flowering in mature vegetation inside the Kruger National Park. |
