Scientific Name | Euphorbia waterbergensis R.A.Dyer |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | EUPHORBIACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Rare |
Assessment Date | 2008/06/25 |
Assessor(s) | P.J.D. Winter, J.E. Victor & L. von Staden |
Justification | EOO 730 km². Until 1978 this species was known from only three subpopulations and it was placed on the former Transvaal Province's list of threatened species. However, subsequent surveys indicated that although restricted in range, the species is locally very common and there are more than 10 subpopulations. Isolated cases of habitat destruction have affected a few subpopulations in the past, but there is no evidence of continuing decline. Subpopulations appear healthy and are recruiting successfully. However, occasional monitoring is still necessary, because if further declines are detected this species would qualify under NT B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo |
Range | Northern Waterberg between Lephalale, Marongwe and the Lephalale River. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Waterberg Mountain Bushveld |
Description | Quartzite ridges and outcrops, mixed bushveld, 900-1100 m. |
Threats |
Isolated cases of habitat destruction have affected a few subpopulations in the past, but there is no evidence of continuous decline (Fourie 1984). Much of this species' habitat is protected in provincial and private nature reserves, or otherwise used for low-impact game farming. |
Population |
A number of new subpopulations were found during a survey by the former Transvaal Department of Nature Conservation. These were all healthy subpopulations, observed to have prolific flowering and seed set as well as a balanced age-class structure indicating stability (Fourie 1984).
