National Status
Status and Criteria
Vulnerable B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
EOO 173 km², plants at an estimated less than 10 locations continue to decline due to habitat loss to urban expansion and infrastructure development, overgrazing and trampling by cattle, alien plant invasion and habitat degradation as a result of the removal of woody vegetation.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
KwaZulu-Natal
Range
Lower Umgeni and Tugela River valleys.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
KwaZulu-Natal Hinterland Thornveld
Description
Rocky slopes and river valleys.
Threats
Threatened by expansion of human settlements, overgrazing and trampling by cattle, alien plant invasion, road and other infrastructure construction and habitat degradation due to removal of woody vegetation.
Population

This is a very cryptic species and very easily overlooked (A.P. Dold pers. comm.), which explains why it was only very recently discovered in KwaZulu-Natal. Although the lower Umgeni River Valley is highly transformed and the species is likely to be very threatened there, the lower Tugela River Valley still contains many natural and inaccessible sites where subpopulations of this species could survive (Manning et al. 2009). Therefore, although there are currently only three known subpopulations, we are assuming that there are highly likely to be other undiscovered subpopulations.
